As a new day dawns, so do new possibilities. Here are a few of my tips for creating a morning routine that will get your homemaking off to a strong start!
Thinking about getting my house chores done first thing in the morning isn’t the encouragement I need to get out of bed. In fact, if I thought about house chores as soon as I woke up, I would probably turn off my alarm and go back to sleep!
Don’t get me wrong – there are days when I need to get going as soon as my eyes open. But for the most part, falling into a relaxing rhythm is what sets my homemaking off strong.
As a homemaker, creating order in our homes is what gives our families peace. But before we can create peace, we need to be at peace!
I believe a daily routine is one of the most important things you can give your home. And the foundation of that will always be a good morning routine.
Here are my tips for how you can get every day off to a good start.

How to Create a Homemaking Morning Routine
I have an entire blog post dedicated to creating a simple home management system. And in that post, I talk about prioritizing what you and your family need.
The same advice fits great here. As you think about how you want every day to start, think about what would help you lay the best foundation for your day. You may ask yourself things like:
- Do you need time alone before your children wake?
- Do I need to make simple breakfasts?
- Do I need to plan and prepare the night before?
- Do I struggle to remember what I need to do every day?
When you look at the season of life you’re in and weigh that against what your family needs, the tasks that are weighing you down tend to stick out like a sore thumb. So leave them behind!
Here is my personal morning routine. I hope you will draw inspiration from it. Share your morning routine in the comments section of this blog post!
A Good Morning Routine for Homemakers
A productive morning routine may look different for everyone. And if you find that this particular morning routine doesn’t work for you, I hope you’ll check out my Homemaking Tab for other homemaking inspiration!
Wake Up Before Your Children
I tend to split my homemaking tasks into two categories – things I can do with my children and things I can do without my children. Writing a letter to a friend, collecting my thoughts and organizing them in my planner, and studying my Bible are all things I can’t do well when my children are awake.
Nothing beats waking up, getting a cup of coffee in a quiet home, and completing my Bible study before my children wake up.
This is the time I’m able to soak in the quiet and prepare myself for the day.
If you have little kids like I do, you’re all too familiar with the demands, quick conversation, and emotion that come with toddlers. And when they’re fresh from bed, they’re energized and ready to greet the day!
When I wake before my children, I can set the tone for my day. I encourage you to try it and see if it changes your day for the better.
Do a Bible Study
I am a homemaker because I saw God’s job description and knew I wanted to fulfill it. When I stay in tune with God, I can walk hand in hand with Him throughout the day.
This starts with meeting Him where He can teach us how to walk with Him! Your Bible! Don’t neglect it, take the advice from someone in a study, or push it off any further.
Reading the Bible for what it has to say is key to writing God’s word on our hearts. Start your day with it!

Read and Journal
As I go about my day, I’m praying for friends, family, and our nation—everything from the groceries on my table to the sick list at church.
However, I’m always encouraged by the prayers I write down my prayers and I can see God’s answers to them. This is also a great way to keep up with my prayer list from church, or my personal prayer list.
If you don’t like to journal your prayers, try journaling Scripture! My recommendation is to write a Psalm a day. It’s a great way to start the habit and truly get Scripture in your mind.
Eat a Nutrient-Dense Breakfast
Properly fueling my body is another great way to prepare myself for a day of motherhood and homemaking.
I personally love a homemade latte with a big plate of scrambled eggs. Homemade yogurt, granola, and ground sausage are also family favorites of ours.
And when I’m fueling my body for a good day, I’m fostering good habits within my children! As my daughter transitions to elementary school, we can start having deeper conversations about how our body processes sugar, and how we can feed our body the things we need to grow big and strong.
Start the Washing Machine
I know some homemakers like to start their laundry at night and move it to the dryer in the morning.
In my home, I like to start a load of laundry almost as soon as I get up in the morning. By the time I’m finished with breakfast and getting everyone dressed, I can move it to the dryer. By the time lunch is over and it’s time for nap time, the laundry is dry and ready to be folded!
During after-dinner clean up, when the kitchen has been restored and the children are in the bath, I can put all the laundry away.
As a homemaker, it’s so satisfying to complete a task every day! I know that laundry will be there the next day, but I can rest knowing that the system I have in place works and the cycle is completed every day.
Empty the Dishwasher
Even though I don’t do laundry at night, I do run my dishwasher every night! I have found this is the easiest way to keep my kitchen clean, especially after that dinner time rush.
In the morning, usually, while breakfast is cooking, I will empty the dishwasher. This way, it’s ready to load through the day.
This both keeps me on top of dishes, but keeps my kitchen clean, too. Win-win!
Get Dressed
A lot has been said about the link between getting dressed for the day if you’re a stay-at-home mom. So I won’t stress the point too much.
But I will say when we take our jobs as homemakers seriously, we are setting an example for our children, family, and friends, too.
So as the steward of your home, your family, your physical health – take it all seriously! Show up for the day renewed, prepared, and ready to serve.

Keep a Daily Planner
Between juggling homeschooling, homemaking, a business, and my marriage, I’ve got a lot of spinning plates! To make sure I don’t miss anything, I keep a paper planner.
You may have heard writing things down can activate different parts of your brain, making it easier for you to recall things. Some say writing things down also unburdens your brain so you’re able to focus more diligently on other things.
I have found both of those things to be true for me!
So as I’m finishing up my morning coffee, I will always glance at my planner and review any kitchen or home projects that need to get done. As I go about my day, I can prioritize and move around whatever is necessary to keep my home peaceful and put together.
If you haven’t already tried a paper planner, even in this digital age, give it a go and see if it blesses your homemaking!
This Seems Like a Rigid Schedule…
The joy in a simple morning routine is that it doesn’t have to be time-bound. This is simply the flow that works for my family, and it has become a daily habit.
And I have found that as my children grow up and I learn more about keeping house, a morning routine will change based on the season of life I’m in.
I won’t have to dress my children and manage the majority of their activities as they grow up. The household chores will be shared and I won’t be the only one responsible for a clean home.
Remember those things. And don’t forget – I will always encourage you to make the routines (or lack thereof) that work best for you and your family!
What Does the Rest of the Day Look Like for You?
There are so many ways the rest of the day could go!
Do you run your home on a theme-day-based system? I like to assign laundry and cleaning tasks on certain days.
Or maybe you have different priorities than I do, and you like to save your chores for later in the day. Maybe your quiet time comes later and you enjoy waking up with your children.
I would love to know about how you manage your home and the systems you have in place! Be sure to comment on this blog post and let me know!
