It’s just all that more enjoyable to bring them along when I’m not wrestling them in and out of coats, kicking snow off of shoes, and making sure the windshield isn’t covered in ice or frost.

45 fun, frugal spring activities for kids, family
Like my fall family activities and winter family activities blog posts, I’ve broken this blog post up into outdoor activities and indoor activities. Where you live will determine whether or not these are free or frugal activities. So be sure to do your research!
I’ve also included some annual activities in this blog post, like ways to celebrate Easter and ways to observe Cinco de Mayo. Don’t forget about the annual holidays that come with all parts of the year, too!
1 Attend Story Time at your Local Library
Our area libraries have been an incredible resource for us! Not only do they provide summer reading challenges, but they also provide programs like “1,000 books before Kindergarten.” One of our area libraries is also the pickup point for meals for families who need them during the summer.
Have you looked into your area library yet?
I also have a few book recommendations in this post! Jump to “indoor spring activities” to take a look at the books our family loves to reach each spring.
2 Volunteer
3 Wear Green for Saint Patrick’s Day
Annual traditions are fun to participate in, and wearing green for Saint Patrick’s Day is no different!
4 Spring Clean Your Home
Get out a pen and paper! Write out each room in your home and tasks that may need to be done to get those rooms ready for spring. As you work through your week, tackle a few tasks in each room, or go room by room!
Other things that need good spring cleaning include your children’s school work, personal paperwork, your cell phone, and your computer files.
Outdoor Spring Activities
5 Scavenger Hunt
Scavenger hunts can be an indoor or outdoor activity. If you are looking for outdoor scavenger hunt ideas, consider something unconventional, like driving around to landmarks you and your family love.
If you want to organize that style of scavenger hunt ahead of time, you may be able to work with people at those establishments to give your children the clues!
6 Go to a New Park
Our area is teeming with new parks, and there are new features opening at them all the time!
Do some digging to see what’s available in your area. You may be surprised at what was accomplished during the winter!

We love spring simply because it means seeing baby animals. There’s nothing sweeter than seeing chickens with their fresh feathers all fluffed out, or calves learning how to run.

16 Create a Fairy Garden
Fairy gardens are said to attract creatures of fantasy. Whether you believe in those fantasies or not, they are a great addition to any garden, with things like brightly colored mushrooms, houses, and moss. These also make a great indoor craft for a rainy day!
17 Go to the Opening Day of your Farmer’s Market
We love our area farmer’s market! Some of our markets also have special days that host particular activities. Check into your markets and see if they offer some of the same days!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you make a rainy day cozy?
Spring can be hard because the rain seems to invite winter’s chill to stick around. To combat that, consider snuggling up with your kiddos and reading some winter books! You can also make a hot drink and enjoy it knowing that warmer weather is on its way.
What should I bring for a picnic lunch?
Sandwiches are a great picnic lunch. Finger foods are also great! Both options will help you avoid dishes, which is just one more thing you have to think about packing. Consider splurging on a favorite bottled drink from the grocery store that you may not get to enjoy often!
Spring Break
I don’t think we can mention family-friendly spring activities without mentioning spring break!
18 and 19 Swap Spring Break for a Day Trip or a Long Weekend
Instead of a traditional week away from home, consider taking a day trip! We do this frequently because we have small children and it’s been a game-changer in the way we have fun. In that, we can have fun, but when those cranky, toddler feelings come along, we can still head home and get a good night’s sleep!
If your kids are older, you can swap a week-long getaway for a long weekend. That would be the perfect opportunity for a camping trip! As the weather is still cool, bag sleeping bags rated for those cooler nights but enjoy the days while they aren’t scorching hot yet.
Indoor Spring Activities
20-24 Spring Crafts
The number of spring crafts you can make is endless! Think of things like garlands, wreaths, or painting easter eggs.
If you like to DIY things, you can also create things like a custom gallery wall or a watercolor painting of birds you can display in your home.
25 Create an Indoor Obstacle Course
My children love participating in obstacle courses! We were gifted a set of activity cones and that has made setting up spontaneous obstacle courses fun! We also use things like kitchen chairs, couch pillows, and of course – any toys currently in our rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the signs of spring?
Daylight savings time is probably the most obvious sign of spring. However, others include warmer weather and peeps of flowers blooming after winter frost.
How do I transition from winter to spring decor?
The most obvious way to transition from winter to spring decor is by incorporating spring colors into your decor! Ivory and sage green make great complementary colors to something like pale pink.
As you work on your decor, you can also work on spring cleaning. Open those windows, wash your curtains, and create a new craft to cheer up your home.
Other Family-Friendly Spring Activities
29 Lend a Helping Hand by Volunteering
Food banks and community gardens both come to mind immediately. Community gardens are preparing for spring and summer and food banks may be slim on volunteers because school is picking back up after Christmas break. Both are great ways to volunteer and lend a helping hand!
30 Explore a Local Farm in your Area
Family-run farms and farm stands are prevalent in our area. Are they popular in your area?
31 Attend a Spring Festival
Spring festivals in your area are a great way to connect with others in your community. But look into spring festivals around the world! You may be surprised to find some of those activities here in the United States.
For example, the Holi festival in India is celebrated every year in the spring. Spring Equinox is also celebrated in other parts of the world. Both of those are great homeschool lessons!
32 Eat Meals Outside
If you’re a fan of the 1,000 hours outside challenge, this is a great way to get those hours rolling!
If you aren’t familiar with the 1,000 hours outside challenge, it’s just that. Get your children outside for 1,000 hours during the year. During the spring and summer months, that looks like 2 to 4 hours per day. But on those chilly days, consider spending 1 to 2 hours outside.
Walks are also a great way to get outside! Our family loves to walk after meals or before nap time or bedtime. Fresh air does wonders for us, even if it’s just for 20 minutes at a time!
33 Conduct Science Experiments
Easy spring science experiments can include things like tracking rainfall or sprouting seeds. There may even be free homeschool worksheets on either topic! Look through Google and Pinterest to see what’s available to you.
If you’re looking for a great springtime read, I highly recommend Raindrops to Rainbow. You can learn a little about the weather and a lot about colors. We love pulling this book out every spring!
34 Create a Bird Feeder
This would also make a great homeschool lesson! You can also cater your feeder to the birds in your area.
35 Read a Spring Book
While Raindrops to Rainbow is a great place to start, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is also a great way to welcome spring!
36 Go Berry Picking
The spring season is a great time to get your hands on local produce!
Whether you are working with farmers in your area or you are growing it yourself, look around and see what you can get your hands on this time of year.
37 Create an Easter Craft
Memorialize how small your toddler’s footprints were with something like a bunny feet craft. Or create an Easter basket for a child in need this year!
There are so many crafts you could do! Follow me on Pinterest for other craft and homemaking ideas.
Other Ways to Celebrate Easter
As a Christian family, we understand all too well the importance this holiday holds for others. Because Christ died and rose for our sins, it’s important we don’t let that fact slip past us! If you like to gather with others to dwell on His sacrifice, here are a few common ways you can do that.
1 Host an Easter Lunch
2 Do a Bible Study on Jesus’ Resurrection
Ask yourself things like – what is the significance of this? Has this ever happened to anyone else?
3 Attend an Easter Service
We always encourage our friends to look for a church that looks like the Bible!
4 Observe Lent
Lent is the 40 days in the desert Jesus was fasting and tempted by Satan. In a similar fashion, some observe Lent by giving something up, or “fasting” from it, for the 40 days Lent is going on.
There are quite a few things you can give up for lent, but a few ideas are social media, alcohol, sweets or sugar, coffee, gossiping, and fast food.
5 Make a Point to Share About Jesus and His Sacrifice
Mark 16:15-16 pointedly tells us, as New Testament Christians, that sharing about Jesus and His death, burial, and resurrection is a command. So do that! What better time of year to introduce someone to Christ when the rest of the world is doing it, too?
6 Observe all other Resurrection Holidays
Holy Week, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Lent, Easter – what do they all mean? Do you, as a Christian, understand their significance?
The religious world is rife with confusion, but the Bible is not. If, for any reason, you have questions about any of these holidays, I encourage you to do your research and truly understand their history!
7 Do a Bible study on other Biblical Holidays
The Old Testament recounts feasts and traditions God called the Jews to remember. And let’s be real – people easily forget!
While we don’t celebrate these holidays under the New Covenant, it’s still important to understand them and learn more about them so we can learn from them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the meaning behind Easter?
Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
How do I start studying my Bible?
The best way to start studying your Bible is to simply read it. The New American Standard version of the Bible is easy to read.
Also, by understanding key parts of the Bible we can know what is for learning and what is to be applied to our lives. There is a difference between apocalyptic literature and what’s encouragement for brethren.
Finally, having a sort of daily reading routine with supplemental materials is a great way to round out a Bible study. It’s important that we don’t take our supplemental material at face value, though. Always compare what you’re reading to Scripture!
Three Ways to Celebrate Cinco De Mayo
The history behind Cinco De Mayo differs based on where you get your information from. Some say it’s a particular battle, and others say it’s Mexico’s Independence Day from Spanish rule.
Whatever the origin, celebrating with our Hispanic neighbors is an incredible way to get to know them, and their culture, better. Here are three ways you can celebrate Cinco De Mayo. Please note – other celebrations will be specific to your area.
1 Attend a Festival or Parade
This festival will likely have music! Mariachi is traditional to Mexican culture. The style is unrivaled, and music is a language everyone can understand.
2 Eat a Traditional Mexican Dinner
3 Decorate your Home with Pinatas or Tissue Paper Banners
What do you like to do in the spring?
Are there any free activities I forgot to mention?
I focused a lot on toddler-aged children. What about young adults? What kinds of activities would you like to see in this list that include your young adults?
I hope that as you take advantage of the warmer weather you can find free spring activities in your area! As we enter a new season, I hope that you and your family are able to make more memories together!
