Why I Like to Spring Clean
When winter’s slumber wears off and the days get longer, I know my days of being out in the garden and enjoying warmer weather are near!
I can’t wait to sink my feet into lush, green grass. I can’t wait to grab a light jacket instead of a bulky winter coat. And I really can’t wait to enjoy meals outside again!
Even though the warm weather calls me outside, I still have a home to manage. I like to make a list of everything that might need to get done, add a few tasks to my to-do list every week, and get through them.
That’s where this spring cleaning checklist comes in!
This list is a great way to manage your time both inside your home and outside your home. I hope it gives you the direction you need to stay on top of chores and the freedom you need to truly enjoy your time outside this spring.

Where to Start Spring Cleaning
Start your spring cleaning by making a list of necessary repairs. These are things probably things related to damage over the winter.
Obvious damage could be water in your home (like water in a basement) and peeling exterior paint or siding.
Start With Routine Maintenance
Harsh winter weather can leave its mark on any home. Last winter, we saw well over 18 inches of snow (the first time in several years!) and a below-zero wind chill.
All that can wear down on a home!
These are the maintenance tasks I would pay special attention to after the snow melts and the winter chill wears off.
Outdoor Spring Cleaning Checklist
Clear Leaf-Filled Gutters
Inspect Roof for Damage
We got over 12 inches of snowfall this winter! We don’t usually see that much snow. Because of that, I want to make sure my roof sustained the weight of the snow with no issues.
Check Foundation for Water Damage
Inspect Siding for Damage
Snow, sleet, and wind are the key culprits for damaging siding.
Inspect Driveway and Walkways for Cracks
As the ground freezes and expands, so do the driveways and walkways on top of it. Check for cracks and damage caused by the fluctuating temperatures and moisture.
Change Batteries In Your Smoke Detectors
This is a non-negotiable in our home!
The backup battery in a smoke detector is usually good for about six months. The general recommendation for changing your smoke detector battery is every six months. However, this could differ based on the model of smoke detector you have.
Remember this as a rule – you should check the batteries in your smoke detector every time you change your clocks with the time change.

You can also pressure wash the exterior of your home! Do your research to adjust cleaning tips and pressure to the type of siding you have.
Inspect and Repair Door and Window Screens
Properly Store Winter Tools
A new season is a great reason to forget about a dreary one! Don’t let winter get the best of you.
It’s always a good idea to properly store all tools and materials. This will help you find them and preserve them, saving you time and money for when you need them next.
Indoor Spring Cleaning Projects
As we celebrate the holidays and enjoy more time relaxing indoors, it’s easy for projects to pile up. A winter’s rest isn’t just for animals – we need to rest, too!
Tackle a few of these projects a week and you’ll be up to speed on maintenance and cleaning in no time.
Maintain Your Water Heater
Corrosion and sediment build-up can impact your water heater’s ability to function. Check-in on how to maintain it to extend the life of your water heater.
Deep Clean Appliances
Water heaters can last a long time with proper maintenance. So can a dishwasher, oven, and washer and dryer!
Check your manufacturer’s guidelines for how to properly maintain the appliances in your home. At the very least, you can run a cleaning solution through some of these machines.
Reverse Your Ceiling Fan
Ceiling fans rotate in certain directions to push warm air up or down. Change them around so cool air is forced down in preparation for summer!

Scrub Muddy/Salty Floors
In winter, my back door is decorated with snow-covered boots and soggy towels mopping up sweet, snowy memories.
I mop occasionally throughout the winter, but spring is when I throw on the gloves and get into grout lines and baseboards!
Dust Bookshelves and Fans
We may or may not get around to dusting in the winter. But while I’m getting under every couch and cushion in the spring, I like to get in between every book, too.
Don’t forget to dust your light fixtures!
Clean Baseboards
With some warm water and dish soap, you can scrub your baseboards clean in no time!
Reseal Grout Lines
Sealing your grout before spring moisture and humidity can prevent mold growth and mildew. Consider adding it to your project list this year!
Shampoo Carpets
Deep cleaning is the name of the game. And your carpeted surfaces will need the extra time and attention after winter!
You can easily rent a carpet cleaner if you don’t own one. Or ask to borrow one from a friend!
Regular vacuuming can’t reach everything. Get out set-in stains and grime by shampooing carpets and rugs!
Wipe Down Walls
Surprisingly, dust can accumulate on walls. But so can pesky stains from water, food, or chubby baby hands learning how to walk and explore.
Dry-wipe with something like a duster and repeat a second time with a warm washcloth. Check your paint’s cleaning requirements to see if it can withstand soap!
Wash Windows (and Window Tracks!)
Indoor and outdoor, windows can get grimy! Tackle them with warm soap and water in the spring. Don’t forget to get into the window tracks! Many windows will open away from the track to aid in the cleaning process.
Wash Window Treatments
When was the last time you took down your curtains and ran them through the washing machine? As a toddler mom, I plead the fifth…
I purchase simple blackout curtains that can be spun through a delicate cycle in my washing machine.

Clean Vents
A quick dust and some soap and water shine up the vents in my home!
Clean Under Furniture
I talked a bit about dusting your bookshelves. But when was the last time you dusted behind your bed?
Take a day to move large furniture, room by room, and dust and mop while the furniture is removed!
Maintain Furniture
If you have wood or leather furniture, this is a great time to polish or reseal that furniture. Now that temperatures are warm inside and outside, you can move projects to your garage with no worries about freezing temperatures.
Rotate Mattresses
Rotating mattresses can redistribute your weight on the mattress and prolong the life of the mattress.
Clean Pillows
We spend an incredible amount of time in bed. And if you don’t have a protective pillow case, your pillow catches all those nights of beauty sleep!
You can throw most pillows into your washing machine on a delicate cycle and then into your dryer on a no heat, tumble cycle. Just verify your pillow can handle that with the tag that’s attached to it.
Spring Clean is the name of the game, though. Consider adding a new pillow to your shopping list if your pillow won’t hold up in the wash!
