Why Choose Fabric Strips?
I chose fabric strips because you can easily cut fabric with fabric scissors or a rotary cutter. You can easily measure the width with a cutting mat.
You don’t need a sewing machine for this DIY project. And because you don’t have to worry about the proper angles for something like a flag bunting, this is an easy way to be patriotic and creative.
Scrap fabric is a great material for this. You may have also heard of a fabric garland called a “rag garland.”
What About the Length of the Garland?
The standard garland for a mantel is anywhere from 6.5 to 9 feet. A garland for a Christmas tree is closer to 10 feet.
For the purposes of this project, I used a 6 foot piece of twine for my garland. Double check the length of twine from your craft store if you need a longer garland.
Patriotic Fabric Garland Materials
For this project you will need at least 6 feet of twine and red fabric, white fabric, and blue fabric. I recommend getting about a yard of each fabric.
Hemp rope is also an option. It’s strong and durable.
If you aren’t partial to a certain type of fabric, consider using different fabrics. The different textures can add charm and creativity to your fabric garland. Not to mention, it will truly be one of a kind!
While texture isn’t an issue, try to focus on your print. For a traditional, patriotic garland, consider a white stars fabric. If you want to go a more modern route, use something with a red stripe instead of a solid red pattern.

Step-By-Step Tutorial
Cut your fabric into 2-inch strips. My strips are about an inch wide and 6 to 8 inches long. Keep the colors separated.
Cut your twine to your desired length.
There are two ways to tie your fabric strips. You can do a simple knot. Or, you can create a loop on one end and thread your fabric through the loop.

If you have small children, consider adding tinsel, twinkling lights, and pipe cleaners to your rag garland.
More Summer-Themed Decor
Table decor, throw pillows, flowers, and garden stakes are all other ways you can decorate for summer!
I also love changing out coffee mugs for festive, seasonal holidays. You can bring the outdoors in with seasonal flowers.
Finally, summer is best celebrated in color! Sprinkle pops of color throughout your home to bring some of that summer sunshine inside.
Other Patriotic Holidays
Memorial Day and 4th of July are patriotic holidays that fall in the middle of summer. But they aren’t the only patriotic holidays!
Patriotic holidays mark a key point in the history of the United States, many times signifying the death of men and women in service to our country. If you are an active member of our military, my family and I can’t thank you enough for your service.
Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 and is reserved for veterans of all branches of the United States military. Memorial Day is the last Monday in May and is observed to honor service members who lost their lives in service to the United States.
Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is December 7. Every year, the United States remembers the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and the 2,403 service members who were killed.
President’s Day, Flag Day, and Patriot Day are all other patriotic holidays the United States observes.
