Make Christmas memorable with a homemade gift! Glass ornaments are one of my favorite things to give. Here’s how you can paint the inside of a clear, glass Christmas ornament.
I have been painting the inside of clear, glass ornaments for years! Ornaments are incredibly easy to customize to any occasion.
Glass ornaments are also my favorite hostess gift or gift for a large group of people. I have given them out as gifts for mommy groups, and to women at my church!
While I haven’t tried my hand at creating ornaments for my own Christmas decorations, that option is also on the table. Decorating your ornaments is a great way to create a themed Christmas tree to celebrate a milestone, sports team, or other special occasion.
The project is easier than you think! Here is how you paint the inside of a clear Christmas ornament.

How to Paint Inside A Clear Christmas Ornament
Glass ornaments are very simple to paint.
You can also pick up your supplies from the dollar store! This simple DIY is also cheap!
For ornaments and ribbons, I encourage you to check out your local craft store. You are more likely to get a great selection of both ornaments and ribbons!
You will need:
– Acrylic craft paint
– Clear Christmas ornaments (make sure the ornament cap is removable!)
– Paper towel
– Paper cup or plastic cup
Not necessary –
– A makeup brush and rubbing alcohol
– Stickers and other embellishments
– Ribbon
Instructions:
Optional – If you’re removing your ornament from storage or struggling with adhesive labels, take a moment to clear away dust or remove adhesive residue with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel.
Remove the ornament cap from your ornament.
Using your acrylic paint of choice, dispense about a tablespoon of paint into your open ornament.
You don’t need a lot of paint for this project! The amount will vary based on how large your ornament is and what type of paint you use. Adjust to what the project calls for!
Carefully swirl the paint so the entire surface of the inside of the ornament is coated. Dispense more paint as needed to cover bare spots.
Turn the top of the ornament upside down and immediately place it into a paper cup. Let the excess paint drain into the cup.
Wait at least 24 hours prior to replacing the ornament cap.
The next day, replace the ornament cap.
Embellish the outside of your ornament with stickers. I love to use adhesive vinyl and create my own designs with my Cricut machine!
Complete your design with a ribbon of your choice. Cut at least 4 inches of ribbon and thread it through the loop in the ornament cap. Cut down to size if necessary.

How to Choose Ornaments
There is a difference between the outcome of the project if you use plastic Christmas ornaments or glass Christmas ornaments.
Glass Christmas ornaments may already have a sort of shine to them, so you may decide to choose matte paint.
Plastic Christmas ornaments are a great option for a family project, or a DIY involving small children. While working on the project, you’re less likely to break the ornament. A glass ornament does pose some risk.
A plastic Christmas ornament may hold up better over time.
However, a glass Christmas ornament is timeless and special. There’s something about glass that exudes elegance!
I hope deciding on a sort of pros and cons list before beginning your project is helpful to you!
How to Choose Paint
I suggested using acrylic paint for this project. Acrylic paint has a matte finish to it. Since I like to embellish my ornaments, I’ve noticed this is a great way to let my embellishments shine.
Enamel paint has a glossy finish to it. This is also a great option to elevate the look of your ornaments.
I don’t have any recommendations on the brand of paint to use, because what’s available to me might not be available to you.
What you have budgeted may also determine what type of paint you use. A department store may have several options to choose from, while the dollar store may only have a few.
You can also combine paint to form a special color or swirl your paint.
This DIY project can truly become your own special gift!

How to Choose a Color Scheme
When I am gifting ornaments to my mommy groups, I think back to the year we had.
Is there an event we loved? Is there a topic we covered in depth?
Asking those same questions is an easy way to choose a color scheme for a lady’s Bible class or another women’s group!
You could also choose your paint color based on the designs of the holiday season.
Classic gold and silver have been popular in recent years. Red and green are always perfect for Christmas. But pastels and vibrant hues have been growing in popularity, too!

Beautiful Ornaments Make a Great Christmas Gift!
DIY ornaments can be sentimental. You can get your whole family to participate and create a memory to pass down to your children, or a memory to gift to grandparents.
Since the inside of the ornaments are being painted, you won’t have to worry about the paint smudging or being damaged over time.
